The potential danger which lithium-ion batteries can pose, whether inside electric vehicles or transported as standalone cargoes, including the risk of a battery fire if they are not handled, stored, or transported correctly being a very relevant hazard. 

The above challenges plus many others have been considered in the recently published reports of DBI’s ELBAS (Electric Vehicle Fires at Sea) and the CARGOSAFE study (addressing how to develop new proposals to reduce the risk of fires on container ships) carried out by DBI. Regulators are also working on new guidance and recommendations for best practices in the area.
